frequently asked questions
What is coaching? Is it like therapy?
Coaching is different from therapy. I'm not treating mental illness, I'm not past focused. We are focusing on the here and now, and the future. We are working together to help identify obstacles, develop skills and implement concrete, achievable steps. We aren't trying to understand where you came from, we're trying to get you to where you're going. I'm here to provide perspective, clarity, and guide you to make decisions and act on things that are important to you. Coaching is a great adjunct to therapy!
If you're experiencing a mental health crisis, please contact your local emergency services.
Do you do therapy?
No, just coaching for now. Stay tuned, though!
What's it like to work with you? Why should I work with you?
I'm really open minded, supportive, and non-judgmental (really, I've worked in some places where people were really struggling - I've seen a lot. You can't surprise me.)
One of the things that sets me apart from other coaches is that not only am I clinically trained, I've taught others how to develop relationships, identify problems, and work effectively with people. I've authored academic papers and authored or been interviewed for popular press on areas concerning wellness and mental health. I've mentored hundreds of students during my academic career, so I'm really well trained to work with a wide variety of people.
I am really familiar with the change process, from a professional, academic, and personal standpoint.
I'll be authentic and genuine in our relationship, and in my work with you. I know my stuff, but you're the expert in yourself. You'll work hard, and I'll push you.
An initial phone call (30 mins) is free to see if we are a good match. If we decide we are a good fit, you can determine how often we meet.
How will we meet?
I am physically located in Massachusetts, with a primary office in Arlington, MA. I am also available virtually, and can be hired to travel.
Do you do trainings and consultations?
I sure do! Training is my other love. I am available for trainings from individuals, to small groups, to large audiences. I'm available for corporate, nonprofit, or educational presentations and consultations. I've presented in front of groups of a few to a few thousand. I'm happy to provide my academic CV upon request, or ask me if I can present a training on a particular topic.
Do you take insurance?
As a coach, I do not accept insurance, but you may be able to use professional development funds from your employer to work with me. Please check with your employer.
Why do you charge a fee?
Coaching is an investment. With me, you're getting doctoral level training in working with people and years of experience. We're going to work to get results, and this is an investment in yourself and your future.
